If you need heat, the Matrice 4T is the correct purchase. This is the survey model. DJI says it maps precisely with RTK enabled and the 4T's precision cannot be guaranteed.

01

There is no thermal camera on this aircraft, and if you need heat the decision ends here

DJI's own answer to the model question lists the 4E's sensors in full. A 4/3 inch wide angle camera, a medium telephoto, a telephoto, a laser rangefinder. There is no thermal entry, and every thermal row on DJI's specification page sits under the 4T heading. The near infrared auxiliary light, a lamp for night work, is 4T only as well. So the 4T reads as the richer aircraft, and for a survey buyer that is the trap. DJI's FAQ says the 4E supports precise mapping after enabling RTK function, and that equipping the 4T with the RTK module cannot guarantee the final precision. RTK is a live satellite correction on top of GPS. Both aircraft carry the same module.

02

Three cameras, and the wide one is the survey camera on the 4E

The wide camera uses a 4/3 inch CMOS at 20 MP effective. CMOS is the chip that catches the light, MP is megapixels, and sensor sizes are written as fractions, so 4/3 inch is the large one here. It runs f/2.8 to f/11 at a 24 mm equivalent focal length, with an 84 degree field of view, and its largest file is 5280 by 3956. The medium tele is a 1/1.3 inch CMOS at 48 MP and 70 mm. The tele is a 1/1.5 inch CMOS at 48 MP and 168 mm, with 16x digital and 112x hybrid zoom. Both share the 4T's sensors, and the laser rangefinder is shared too.

03

The mechanical shutter sits on the wide camera only, and the 4T does not have one

An electronic shutter reads the sensor line by line, so a frame taken from an aircraft moving at speed can lean. A mechanical shutter opens and closes across the whole frame in one action instead. On the 4E's wide camera it runs 2 s to 1/2000 s, alongside an electronic shutter at 2 s to 1/8000 s. DJI's specification gives the 4T no mechanical shutter at all. Two more wide camera differences follow it. The 4E writes DNG raw files, the sensor data before processing, where the 4T's wide camera writes JPEG only. Its minimum photo interval is 0.5 s against the 4T's 0.7 s. DJI publishes no service life or actuation rating for the shutter mechanism, and we will not estimate one.

04

One flight covers 2.8 square kilometers, and that figure holds under four conditions

Ground sample distance is the size of one image pixel on the ground. DJI measured the 2.8 square kilometers, about 690 acres, at a GSD of 5 cm, 80 percent front overlap, 70 percent side overlap, and 15 m/s. The 4E captures sideways while it flies the straight down pass, which reduces the side overlap the job needs. DJI puts mapping flight speed at up to 21 m/s, measured without payload in a windless environment near sea level. Its FAQ says the wide camera maps without ground control points, surveyed marks placed on the ground. The tele camera does not, on any Matrice 4.

05

The 1 cm positioning figure is where the aircraft is, not how good the map is

In RTK Fix status the aircraft positions to 1 cm plus 1 ppm horizontally and 1.5 cm plus 1 ppm vertically. Ppm is a part per million of the distance to the base station, so the error grows with that baseline. That is the aircraft's own position. DJI publishes no absolute accuracy figure for the finished map, no percentage and no centimeter number. The RTK module is built in and DJI confirms it is not removable, so it is neither an add on nor an option to skip. Network RTK reaches the controller over Wi-Fi without a cellular dongle, and DJI binds that connection to the controller rather than the aircraft.

06

DJI rates this aircraft No Standard Protection Level, which means no IP rating at all

That is DJI's own wording on the specification page. There is no ingress rating, nothing is published about dust or splash resistance, and we will not imply any. DJI's FAQ is blunt about water. Avoid contact with water during use. If it rains during the flight, return and land as soon as possible. Wait until the aircraft is fully dry inside and out before using it again. The safety guidelines call it a good to moderate weather aircraft, and rule out wind above 12 m/s, snow, rain, fog, hail and lightning. Operating range is -10°C to 40°C (14°F to 104°F). The battery has no self heating function and DJI says cold shortens flight time. If your survey season is wet or cold, this is not your aircraft.

07 FOR UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

We sell one configuration, and what DJI leaves unconfirmed goes on the phone, not this page

My Surveying Direct is an authorized DJI Enterprise dealer and the aircraft is shipped direct from the manufacturer. Purchase orders are accepted from universities, colleges and government agencies. Then the things we will not print. DJI markets a one year DJI Terra license with this aircraft, and a free year of DJI Care Enterprise Plus or extended warranty. Its own footnote says the plan varies by country or region. Neither is confirmed for our SKU. DJI sells the RC Plus 2 Enterprise controller in a standard and an enhanced edition, and which one ships with ours is not confirmed. Its packing list varies propellers and power cables by region. Call +1 888 850 6533, Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 Mountain Time, and we will confirm all of it against your order first.

IR-Cut Filter DJI states this two ways on one page. Under Night Scene Mode, the Matrice 4 series is "Equipped with an IR Cut Filter and NIR auxiliary light". Elsewhere on the same page, "the Matrice 4T is equipped with an IR-Cut Filter, ensuring 24/7 operations". DJI's own footnote 3 restricts the NIR auxiliary light to the Matrice 4T, and its specification table lists Infrared Illumination under the 4T alone.
Minimum photo interval DJI Matrice 4E: 0.5 s (DJI Matrice 4T: 0.7 s)
Laser rangefinder Measurement range 1800 m (1 Hz) at 20% reflectivity target; oblique incidence range 600 m (1 Hz); blind zone 1 m; accuracy at 1-3 m: system error <0.3 m, random error <0.1 m at 1 sigma; other distances: +/-(0.2+0.0015 x D). Performance may degrade in rain or fog. Also fitted on the DJI Matrice 4T
What the 4E does not have
Thermal camera None. DJI's own camera list for the 4E (wide, medium tele, tele, laser rangefinder) has no thermal entry; the thermal camera (uncooled VOx, 640x512) is Matrice 4T only, confirmed by DJI's spec-page section header and FAQ footnote 2
NIR auxiliary light None. DJI's FAQ footnote states the NIR auxiliary light is 'only available with Matrice 4T,' for lighting the 4T's tele camera at night
Mapping and precision
Single-flight mapping coverage 2.8 square kilometers, about 690 acres, in one flight, measured at a GSD of 5 cm, 80% front overlap, 70% side overlap, and a flight speed of 15 m/s
Mapping without ground control points Supported on the 4E's wide-angle camera. DJI's FAQ states the tele camera does not support GCP-free mapping on any Matrice 4 series aircraft, and specifically calls out the 4E's wide camera as the one that does
Precision mapping with RTK DJI Matrice 4E supports precise mapping after enabling RTK function. Equipping DJI Matrice 4T with the RTK module cannot guarantee the final precision
Mapping flight speed Up to 21 m/s, measured without payload, in a windless environment near sea level
In-camera distortion correction Distortion Correction 2.0, residual distortion less than 2 pixels; each wide camera is factory-calibrated before shipping. DJI notes production tolerances exist between individual aircraft and the figure is for reference only
DJI Terra compatibility DJI Terra applies the 4E's in-camera distortion correction, supports free offline PPK processing of visible-light images, and can import D-RTK 3 Multifunctional Station data to improve reconstruction accuracy. DJI states a one-year DJI Terra license is provided with Matrice 4E purchase; not confirmed for our SKU
Auto-generated survey quality report DJI Pilot 2 generates a report after each operation covering photo points, RTK status, and photo parameters, so gaps can be identified and re-shot on site
Aircraft and flight performance
Takeoff weight (with propellers) 1219 g, standard propellers, including the battery, propellers, and a microSD card; actual weight may vary with batch materials
Max takeoff weight 1420 g (standard propellers), 1430 g (low-noise propellers)
Max payload 200 g
Max flight time 49 min (standard propellers), 46 min (low-noise propellers), measured flying at approximately 9 m/s without payload in a windless environment until battery reached 0%

RTK GNSS accuracy RTK Fix: 1 cm + 1 ppm (horizontal), 1.5 cm + 1 ppm (vertical)
RTK module Integrated into the aircraft; DJI's FAQ confirms it is not removable, so it cannot be omitted or swapped as a separate purchase
Network RTK Reachable over Wi-Fi from the remote controller without a 4G dongle; DJI's FAQ states the Network RTK connection is bound to the remote controller, not the aircraft
D-RTK 3 Multifunctional Station compatibility Optional base station for centimeter-level positioning; supports base station, relay station, and Rover Station modes, and its data can be imported into DJI Terra to enhance reconstruction accuracy
Battery and charging
Capacity and energy 6741 mAh, 99.5 Wh, Li-ion 4S, 401 g
Cycle count Rated for 200 cycles. DJI states stability is affected after the rated cycle count and the battery should be replaced; the buyer is responsible for any aircraft damage caused by a battery used past its rated cycles
Operating temperature -10C to 40C (14F to 104F); battery life is shortened in low temperature, so flight time should be scheduled accordingly
Self-heating Not supported. DJI confirms this battery does not have a self-heating function for cold-weather use
Charging method Can only be charged using the DJI Matrice 4 Series Charging Hub; the aircraft itself cannot be charged directly (no aircraft charging support)
Charging temperature 5C to 40C (41F to 104F); DJI's safety guidance recommends letting the battery cool to near room temperature before charging and gives 22C to 28C (72F to 82F) as the ideal charging range for battery longevity
Charge time (100 W hub) Approximately 78 minutes to fully charge one battery in Standard Mode, or approximately 60 minutes to reach 90% in Ready-to-Fly Mode. A faster 200 W hub exists but is not sold in certain countries or regions
Storage caution DO NOT store the battery fully discharged for an extended period; over-discharge causes irreparable cell damage. A battery left at low charge for a long period enters deep hibernation and must be recharged to wake it
Liquid and crash caution DO NOT allow liquid contact with the battery or use a battery that has been in a crash or heavy impact; DJI takes no responsibility for damage from non-DJI batteries or chargers
Controller
Controller edition DJI states the Standard Edition is the series default and the Enhanced Edition is a separate purchase. Which edition ships with our SKU is not confirmed; call to confirm
Enhanced controller option DJI RC Plus 2 Enterprise Enhanced Edition, purchased separately, adds expansion interface components for compatibility with more industry accessories

Controller operating temperature -20C to 50C (-4F to 122F)
Weight 1.15 kg without external battery
Dual operator support Not supported. DJI's FAQ states the Matrice 4 series does not support dual controls, unlike some other DJI enterprise controllers
DJI Goggles compatibility Not compatible, per DJI's FAQ
Video transmission and sensing
Video transmission system O4 Enterprise, 8 antennas, 2T4R, 1080p/30fps live view
Max transmission distance 25 km (FCC), 12 km (CE/SRRC/MIC), measured unobstructed and interference-free; DJI notes real-world range drops to roughly 1.5-5 km in strong interference such as city centers
Latency 130 ms under near-field, interference-free conditions with a 1x lens
Max download speed 20 MB/s, measured with the aircraft and controller in close proximity and no interference
Obstacle sensing Omnidirectional binocular vision system plus a 3D infrared sensor on the aircraft's underside. DJI states the system needs a delicately textured, adequately lit surface (front/back/left/right/up) or a downward surface with rich texture and over 20% reflectivity to function
4G transmission module Not standard. DJI confirms the Matrice 4 series does not come standard with a 4G Enhanced Transmission Module; the DJI Cellular Dongle 2 is sold separately and is not available in all countries or regions
Ingress protection, weather and honesty notes
Ingress protection rating No Standard Protection Level. This aircraft carries no IP rating of any kind
Waterproofing Not waterproof. DJI's FAQ: 'Avoid contact with water during use as it may lead to damage of the device. If it rains during the flight, return and land as soon as possible, and wait until the aircraft is fully dry inside and out before using it again.'
Weather operating limits Designed for good to moderate weather only. DJI's safety guidance: do not fly in wind exceeding 12 m/s, or in snow, rain, fog, hail, or lightning
Altitude and GEO restrictions DJI's default consumer-style safety guidance caps flight at 120 m (400 ft) above ground level unless local law or a GEO zone permits otherwise; applicability to a waivered commercial survey operation is not addressed in DJI's own document
Vision positioning limits DO NOT fly where GNSS signal is weak (indoors, near tall buildings) or where surfaces lack texture for vision positioning, such as open water or fresh snow
Genuine parts caution DJI's safety guidance: use only genuine DJI parts or DJI-authorized parts; unauthorized parts may cause system malfunctions and compromise flight safety
Regional use restriction DJI's FAQ states the aircraft cannot be used across countries or regions without confirming applicability with the dealer first; this is a regulatory constraint, not a technical one
Regulatory and warranty
EASA certification C2 certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency
