The UHF radio in the Reach RS3 receives corrections only, and it never transmits

The Reach RS3 carries a UHF radio in the 410 to 470 MHz band, using the TRIMTALK 450S protocol. Emlid states this radio outright as receive-only. It never transmits. A buyer planning to run an RS3 as a UHF base, broadcasting corrections out to a UHF rover, cannot do that with this radio. Receiving corrections from a third-party UHF base needs a separate 410 to 470 MHz antenna, sold apart from the receiver and not included in the box. Two other radios in this receiver do transmit and receive corrections out of the box. The built-in LoRa radio sends and receives up to 8 km line of sight, and pairs base-to-rover with another Reach RS2, RS2+ or RS3. The built-in LTE modem, with a nano-SIM, carries corrections over NTRIP wherever cellular coverage reaches. If a UHF base is the plan, call us first and we will confirm the radio setup fits.

RTK accuracy is 7 mm plus 1 ppm horizontal, and every figure here carries its condition

RTK, real time kinematic positioning, corrects the receiver's raw signal against a base station as you work. In RTK mode the Reach RS3 holds 7 mm + 1 ppm horizontal accuracy and 14 mm + 1 ppm vertical, where ppm means the error grows a little further from base with every kilometer of distance. Static observation, left running over a fixed point, tightens to 4 mm + 0.5 ppm horizontal and 8 mm + 1 ppm vertical. PPK, post processed kinematic, corrects the same raw signal after the survey rather than live in the field, and lands at 5 mm + 0.5 ppm horizontal and 10 mm + 1 ppm vertical. Tilt compensation adds 2 mm plus 0.3 mm per degree of lean, about 20 mm at Emlid's rated maximum of 60 degrees. Convergence, the time to lock a fix, runs about 5 seconds. The receiver updates at up to 10 Hz and tracks 184 channels across GPS, QZSS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo, with no L5, E5a, E6 or NavIC tracking on this chipset.

Tilt compensation needs no field calibration, and initializes in about 20 meters of walking

Tilt compensation lets the pole lean off vertical, useful near walls or under cover, without walking back to stand it up straight. Emlid calibrates each RS3 individually at the factory, so no field calibration is needed before first use. The tilt sensor is unaffected by magnetic fields, Emlid states, so it keeps working close to metal structures. Initialization takes about 20 meters of walking, or 10 to 20 seconds of tilting the pole. Emlid Flow, free on iOS and Android, is the primary app for tilt-compensated surveying. Emlid's own third-party integration table lists guided support for Microsurvey FieldGenius, but only on Android and Windows, not iOS, and most other listed apps, including QGIS, ArcGIS Field Maps, Mergin Maps and Global Mapper, show that same pattern. Check the table against your app and platform before buying for a specific workflow.

Five ways to connect, and Emlid's own two documents disagree on one of them

A built-in LTE modem, with a nano-SIM, carries correction data over cellular networks wherever coverage reaches. Wi-Fi runs on 802.11 b/g/n. LoRa, a long range low power radio, sends and receives corrections up to 8 km line of sight, pairing base-to-rover with another Reach RS2, RS2+ or RS3. Bluetooth is where Emlid's own documents disagree. The live product page states Bluetooth 5.4. Emlid's own PDF datasheet for the same receiver, dated September 2023, instead states Bluetooth 4.0 and 2.1 EDR. One independent dealer corroborates the older datasheet figure exactly; another states no Bluetooth version at all. Neither figure is confirmed here, and neither is dropped. An RS-232 port and a USB-C port round out the connections, either carrying RTK correction data to a third-party radio or streaming the receiver's position to a third-party app.

18 hours as a tilted rover, 22 hours logging, and an IP67 shell for both

As an RTK rover with tilt on, the Reach RS3 holds an 18 hour charge. Switch tilt off and log without it, and the same battery stretches to 22 hours. The pack is 5,200 mAh, 7.2 V lithium-ion, rated for more than 2,000 charge cycles, charging over USB-C at 5 V, 3 A. Maximum power draw is 10 W. An external connector accepts 6 to 40 V and can turn the receiver on and off automatically, for use as a permanent base or mounted on a vehicle. The polycarbonate body, wrapped in an elastomer coating, resists drops and rates IP67: dust-tight and waterproof to one meter of continuous immersion, across -20 to +65 degrees Celsius. The receiver measures 126 x 126 x 142 mm, weighs 950 g, and mounts on a 5/8 inch thread.

The RS2+ wears the same shell; the RS4 line runs a chipset the RS3 does not have

The Reach RS2+ shares the RS3's exact enclosure: 126 x 126 x 142 mm, 950 g, IP67, -20 to +65 degrees Celsius. Size and weight cannot tell the two apart. Tilt compensation does: RS2+ has none, where RS3 carries the figures above. Battery chemistry differs too: RS2+ runs 6,400 mAh LiFePO4 at 6.4 V, against RS3's 5,200 mAh lithium-ion at 7.2 V. Emlid's newer RS4 and RS4 Pro use a different, more compact enclosure and a materially newer chipset: 672 tracked channels against RS3's 184, with L5, E5a, E6 and NavIC tracking RS3 does not have. The RS4 line also runs its LoRa radio at up to 1 W against RS3's 0.1 W, and carries a tougher IP68 rating across a wider -40 to +65 degree range. RS3's 0.1 W LoRa figure is its own current, correct specification, not a downgraded one. If the extra channels, the colder rating or the stronger radio matter to your work, look at RS4 or RS4 Pro instead. If tilt compensation is the feature deciding the purchase, RS3 is the receiver built for exactly that job.

Emlid's product page, its documentation site and its Hong Kong store state no warranty term for the Reach RS3 anywhere. The receiver ships with a first year of Emlid Corrections included, a network correction service accurate to 1 to 2 cm with no base station or NTRIP setup required; further years are a separate paid subscription.
