Glass, featureless spaces and moving crowds are the sites where this scanner struggles, not the ones where it shines

SLAM, mapping a space from motion alone with no fixed setup, is how the Trion P1 builds a point cloud as you walk. FJD names three site types the P1 struggles with. Large areas of glass confuse the sensor with reflections. Repetitive or featureless structures, such as long identical corridors, and open featureless spaces, such as large lawns or squares, give it nothing to lock onto. FJD also says not to scan near moving people or vehicles, for example a crossroads. The operator works alone, and any second person present must stay behind the operator to avoid being captured in the scan. If your site has heavy glass, wide open ground or busy foot traffic, know that before you order it.

It is a 1 kg handheld unit built to capture point clouds in real time, not open landscapes

LiDAR, light detection and ranging, is the laser system that measures distance to build the scan. The Trion P1 is a handheld LiDAR scanner that builds a point cloud, a dense field of measured points, as the operator walks a space. It weighs 1 kg, excluding the camera module and baseplate. Processing happens in real time. The scan builds on a mobile terminal at up to 200,000 points per second, so gaps are visible while still on site. It needs no fixed setup and no tripod stations. It pairs with an Insta360 X3 camera for color, added after the scan.

FJD rates the P1 to 70 m, but its own accuracy footnote and its own manuals do not fully agree

Maximum scanning range is 70 m, measured at 80% target reflectivity, how well a surface reflects the laser. At 10% reflectivity, a harder target to read, that drops to 40 m. Effective operating range runs from 0.5 m to 70 m. FJD's own manual says accuracy is typically guaranteed only to about 40 m, and recommends working around 30 m for best results. Relative accuracy is up to 2 cm, tested in experimental conditions, per FJD's own footnote. FJD's quick start guide puts the lower end of that range at 2 mm; its user manual puts it at 8 mm. Both agree on the 2 cm upper bound. We have not picked a side on the lower figure, and neither has FJD.

Walk at about 1 m/s, close your loops, and keep each scan task under 20 minutes

FJD recommends a walking speed of 1 m/s, about 2.2 mph, in common environments. Slow to 0.5 m/s or below through corridors, tunnels and stair corners. Loop closure, revisiting a spot so the scan corrects its own drift, needs at least 5 m of overlap at the start and end of a scan. In larger environments, around 10,000 sq m, FJD recommends closing as many loops as possible to control drift. FJD also recommends capping each scan task at 20 minutes on large surveys, to avoid a save failure from limited storage.

The laser is safe for the eye, but the cables and the battery are where the real cautions sit

The LiDAR is Class 1, the eye safe category, at 905 nm, certified to IEC 60825-1:2014 and 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11. FJD still warns against viewing the running laser through a microscope or magnifier. Hot swapping is prohibited: do not plug or unplug the module cable while the P1 is powered on. FJD also warns against repeatedly plugging and unplugging cables, or forcibly bending them. The grip battery runs about 2 hours per charge at room temperature, scanner only, and takes about 1.5 hours to charge via its Type-C port. Do not charge through the handle's port while in use; charge instead through the LiDAR module's own port. Battery capacity drops to 80% after about 800 charge cycles; FJD recommends charging at least once every three months even when idle.

Color is added after the scan, not while you are capturing it

Point cloud colorization is not real time. It happens afterward and needs both the camera module and FJD's Trion Model software. The camera itself shoots a 360 degree field of view at 5760 x 2880 resolution and 30 fps, per FJD's specification page and quick start guide. FJD's own user manual prints a different figure for the same camera, 5760 x 2280, which reads as a typo. Data transfer off the unit is USB-3.0, per FJD's specification page and user manual. Its own quick start guide instead prints USB-2.0 for the same port. Two of three documents favor USB-3.0, so we lead with it; the mismatch is real.
