Trion P1 vs P2 vs S2: which handheld scanner do you actually need?

There are three FJ Dynamics Trion handheld scanners and the difference between them is not the one the spec sheet leads with. Point rate and range matter less than a single question about your deliverable, and getting that question wrong is how departments end up owning an excellent instrument that cannot produce what they need.

The question that decides it

Does the result have to sit in real world coordinates?

That is it. Everything else is a refinement.

All three are SLAM instruments: you walk the site and the scanner solves its own trajectory from the geometry it sees, so there is no control network to establish and no line of sight to a base station. What separates them is whether the finished cloud knows where on Earth it is.

If the deliverable is a floor plan, a volume, an as-built record or a BIM model in a local coordinate system, the Trion P1 or P2 is enough instrument, and paying for georeferencing you will never switch on is money wasted.

If the deliverable has to land on a national grid, tie to existing survey control, or be defensible to a third party, the Trion S2 is the only one of the three that can do it without post processing against control you established some other way.

Two things about that table are worth saying out loud. Every range figure is quoted at 10 per cent reflectivity, which is a dark, poorly returning surface, and that is the honest way to quote it. A number quoted against an 80 per cent target will always look better and will not describe your site. And where FJD has not published a figure, we have left it blank rather than filling it in, because a specification table with no gaps in it is usually a table with guesses in it.

How to read it, by what you actually do

Interiors, as-builts and small sites: the P1

Two centimeters of relative accuracy over a 40 meter range covers most interior and small site work. At 1.05 kg it is the lightest way into SLAM capture, it holds 512 GB on board, and it is the only one of the three with a published IP rating, IP54.

The catch is the runtime. Two hours per grip battery is a morning, not a day, so budget for spares before the first job rather than after it.

Outdoors, or larger spaces: the P2, and it is usually worth the $1,500

The range nearly doubles to 70 meters and the runtime doubles to four hours. In practice that second figure is the one that changes your day: it is the difference between one battery swap and four.

The P2 also holds tighter relative accuracy, 1.2 cm against up to 2 cm. If any part of the work is outside, this is the one to buy.

What is in the P2 box. The scanner, the panoramic camera module, a base plate, two batteries, a charger, a USB cable, a target sheet, a cleaning cloth, a one year warranty, lifetime support and Trion Model Basic. No RTK module. That single absence defines the instrument, and it is the honest reason it costs half what the S2 does.

Georeferenced output: the S2, and nothing else will do

The S2 carries an integrated IMU and an RTK module, so the cloud lands in real world coordinates on the walk rather than being fitted to control afterward. It runs 320,000 points per second and colorizes from two 12 MP cameras.

It is also 2 kg, twice the P2, and roughly $9,000 more. That difference is the IMU and the RTK module. It is worth every dollar when the deliverable must be georeferenced and it is worth nothing when it must not be. There is more on this in does a handheld LiDAR scanner need RTK.

Above the S2 the line continues with the S2 Pro and the S2 Max, which is the model specified in the department package. Neither is a cart listing; ask and we will quote them.

What nobody budgets for

This is the part that turns a good purchase into a bad quarter, and it applies to all three.

  • Processing software. The FJD Trion Model license is $6,719. A team that owns a scanner and no license produces nothing for a month. Budget for it at the same time, not afterward.
  • An extension pole, $450. It reaches over obstructions, under soffits and into voids, and it takes the scanner off your chest for the length of a survey. Unglamorous and always missing from the requisition.
  • Spare batteries, particularly on the P1.

Where the three genuinely fail

SLAM has one failure mode and it is the same on all three: it needs geometry to track against. Long featureless corridors, blank walls, open fields and large flat car parks are where the solution drifts, because there is nothing for the scanner to hold on to.

This is worth testing rather than taking on trust. Every point cloud we publish came off an instrument we sell, and the sample capture data page has downloadable files with the solved trajectory alongside them. Walk the trajectory back to its start: on a closed loop the beginning and the end are the same place, and how far apart they are in the cloud is the honest measure of a SLAM instrument. If you are choosing between SLAM and something else

Handheld SLAM wins on time by a wide margin. A terrestrial laser scanner on a tripod wins on accuracy, millimeter class against centimeter class, and is the correct tool for deformation monitoring or heritage recording. Photogrammetry wins on area covered per dollar and fails on water, glass, uniform surfaces and anything under vegetation.
