DJI rates this aircraft IP55, and rates the Matrice 4T we also sell as No Standard Protection Level
IP is the ingress protection scale for dust and water. DJI's FAQ answers the comparison itself, in five items. IP55 protection. A 54-minute maximum flight time. Greater payload capacity. Airborne relay. Arms that do not fold. The specification tables add more. Two decide most jobs. This aircraft operates from -20 °C to 50 °C where the 4T runs -10 °C to 40 °C. Its battery is 6S, six cells in series, at 149.9 Wh, against the 4T's 4S at 99.5 Wh. DJI claims the greater payload capacity without publishing a figure for it, so we quote none. Four of the five favor this aircraft. The fifth is the reason to think twice.

The arms do not fold, and for a crew working out of a truck that is the argument for buying the 4T
DJI puts the aircraft at 377.7 × 416.2 × 212.5 mm without propellers, and that is the size it stays. The 4T folds. This does not. Every case, every locker and every back seat takes the full span on every job. One note worth having early: the visible gaps at each arm base are rotational dampers that cut vibration, not defects. Buy the Matrice 4T instead if the aircraft travels more than it flies, or if it lives in a pack between sites. Buy it too if your work is fair-weather and mild air, where the bulk buys you nothing. It earns its size in conditions the 4T carries no rating for.

IP55 is a laboratory figure that wears off, and DJI still tells you to stay out of moderate rain
DJI's own footnote: tested in controlled laboratory conditions, and the rating "is not permanently effective and may decrease due to product wear and tear". Its checklist before flight names the failure mode. Leave the cover off an unused port and the ingress protection performance is affected. The safety guidelines still call this good to moderate weather equipment, and rule out winds above 12 m/s, snow, moderate rain, fog, hail and lightning. The 12 m/s wind resistance figure covers operation as well as takeoff and landing. Do not power it on with water inside, which DJI says may cause permanent component damage. The wide, medium tele and tele cameras do support lens defogging. IP55 changes none of the rest.

The thermal detector is the same 640 × 512 as the 4T, and the measurement window is where the two differ
The sensor is an uncooled VOx microbolometer, an infrared detector, at 640 × 512 and 30 Hz. UHR Infrared Image mode, ultra-high resolution, outputs 1280 × 1024 with Night Scene off. The lens matches the 4T's too. The measurement window moved in both directions. High Gain reads -40 °C to 150 °C where the 4T reads -20 °C to 150 °C. Low Gain reads 0 °C to 500 °C where the 4T reads 0 °C to 550 °C. Colder at the bottom, 50 degrees short at the top. DJI's warning is blunt. Do not expose the infrared lenses to strong energy sources such as the sun, lava or a laser beam. The sensor may be burned permanently. No ceiling temperature for it appears on DJI's product page, specifications, FAQ or safety guidelines, so we name none. The gimbal, the powered camera mount, now tilts to +90° rather than +70°. Above +70° the body obstructs the wide, medium tele and thermal cameras, DJI warns.

The 54 minutes is a windless lab figure, and the battery underneath it is a different product
DJI measured it flying forward at a constant 12 m/s, windless, 20 m above sea level. Photo mode, Obstacle Avoidance Action off, run from 100% to 0%. Hovering in the same conditions gives 47 minutes. Plan for less than either. The pack is a Matrice 4D Series Battery, model BPX230-6768-22.14: Li-ion 6S, 149.9 Wh, 640 g, rated for 400 cycles. It supports low-temperature self-heating charging. The 4T's 4S pack is 99.5 Wh, rated for 200 cycles, with no self-heating. The two are not interchangeable, and this aircraft charges through its own 240 W hub rather than the 100 W hub the 4T and 4E use. Charge between 5 °C and 45 °C, and not straight after landing, because DJI says a hot pack can be seriously damaged.

You do not need a dock, and DJI publishes a separate manual for flying this aircraft on a controller
DJI's FAQ is direct: the 4D Series supports manual flight with DJI RC Plus 2 Enterprise, and DJI publishes a separate manual for it. Its controller table lists that controller against the 4TD, 4D, 4T and 4E. A controller bought for a Matrice 4T flies this one too. Two controllers at once are not supported. Transmission is O4+ Enterprise rather than the 4T's O4 Enterprise, though both publish 25 km maximum under FCC rules. DJI also gives the 4D Series airborne relay, where one drone flies high and relays the signal for another through mountainous terrain. Asked whether relay works when connected with DJI Dock 3, DJI answers currently no. Relay is a controller-flown capability.

How to buy it, starting with where it will fly and what your configuration includes
DJI's answer on using the Matrice 4D Series across countries or regions is a flat no. It says to confirm the applicable ones with your dealer before buying, so name the country when you call. DJI publishes no labeled packing diagram for the 4D Series on its product page, its specifications or its FAQ. The aircraft also sells in more than one configuration.
