The Matrice 4D is the Matrice 4E with a weather rating, and that is the whole argument
DJI rates this aircraft IP55. It rates the Matrice 4E and 4T at No Standard Protection Level, its term for no ingress rating at all. Ingress protection is resistance to dust and water. The 4D operates from -20°C to 50°C (-4°F to 122°F), where the 4E stops at -10°C to 40°C. Its battery is a different product: 6S lithium ion, 149.9 Wh, 400 rated cycles, and it self heats to charge in the cold. The 4E and 4T share a 4S pack at 99.5 Wh and 200 cycles, with no self heating. The packs are not interchangeable. Flight time is 54 minutes, measured flying forward at a constant 12 m/s in a windless laboratory, obstacle avoidance off. DJI's marketing page states 47 minutes at 15 m/s, which its own specification page does not support. Treat that figure as contested.

The cameras are identical to the 4E's, so this buys weather and not better imagery
DJI says the drones use the same cameras as the Matrice 4 Series. The 4D has a 4/3 inch CMOS wide angle camera at 20 MP effective, plus 48 MP medium tele and tele cameras. CMOS is the chip that catches the light, and MP is megapixels. Those are the Matrice 4E's sensors exactly, mechanical shutter included. Neither has a thermal camera or a near infrared lamp. On DJI's Dock 3 page both sit under the Matrice 4TD heading; on its Matrice 4 Series page, under the 4T. Both DJI specification pages put the shared laser rangefinder's accuracy beyond 3 m at +/-(0.2+0.0015 x D), D in meters. Nothing on this aircraft is a better survey camera than the 4E's.

IP55 is a laboratory rating with conditions, and DJI lists what voids it
IP55 comes from IEC 60529, the international ingress standard. DJI tested it in stable laboratory conditions with the Intelligent Flight Battery fitted, and says the rating is not permanent and may lower over an extended period. Its user manual lists what voids it. An unofficial or loosely installed battery, expansion port covers left open, a loose dongle compartment or external device, a cracked shell, aged water resistant adhesive. DJI also says do not fly when rainfall exceeds 100 mm in 24 hours, and that the warranty does not cover water damage. The anti icing propellers lose effectiveness with use, and DJI says replace them at least every 12 months or 500 flight hours. Charging is on a 240 W hub, three packs in sequence. One dealer page states a wider operating temperature; we use DJI's. DJI's safety guidelines go further than the rating. The aircraft is designed for good to moderate weather. DJI says not to fly it in winds over 12 m/s, snow, moderate rain, fog, hail or lightning.

The arms do not fold, and a crew moving between sites daily should buy the 4E instead
DJI's FAQ says the arms of the Matrice 4D Series do not fold. DJI publishes a single dimension figure of 377.7 by 416.2 by 212.5 mm without propellers. The Matrice 4E folds. For a survey team moving between sites in a vehicle, that is a real cost in case size, van space and handling. If your crew runs three sites a day in dry conditions, buy the 4E. Choose the 4D when the season is wet or cold, or when the aircraft lives at one site. It weighs 1850 g with battery, propellers and a microSD card. DJI says the 4D supports greater payload capacity than the 4E and 4T. It publishes no gram figure anywhere we checked, and we will not invent one.

DJI Dock 3 is optional, and the RC Plus 2 Enterprise controller flies this aircraft on its own
DJI publishes the Matrice 4D under its Dock 3 pages, which misleads people. You do not need a dock. DJI's FAQ answers it directly: the 4D Series links with the DJI RC Plus 2 Enterprise controller for manual flight. DJI publishes a separate user manual for that configuration. It is the same controller the 4E and 4T use. The reverse does not hold. DJI states Dock 3 supports only the Matrice 4D Series, so a 4E or 4T owner cannot dock at all. Airborne relay, one aircraft flying high to relay signal for another, works in standalone flight; docked, DJI says currently no. Dock 3 is a separate purchase; call us for current availability.

DJI says it maps precisely with RTK, and publishes no accuracy figure to go with it
RTK is a live satellite correction on top of GPS, and the module is built into the aircraft. DJI's FAQ says the 4D supports precise mapping after enabling RTK. Only its 4/3 wide angle camera maps without ground control points, the surveyed marks placed on the ground. DJI publishes no accuracy figure for the finished map, in centimeters or percent, anywhere we checked. It does not restate an RTK positioning accuracy on this aircraft's own specification page either, so we are not carrying the 4E's figure across. Five direction oblique capture is here as it is on the 4E, and DJI's own footnote says the function is currently insufficient for urban area mapping.
