OKM's own manual says real depth depends on soil, and the antennas only work if you carry them right
Ground penetrating radar sends a signal into the earth and reads the echo that bounces back, tuned here to find pipelines, cavities, voids and faults. Two antennas do the work, red-marked to transmit, silver-marked to receive, on their own telescopic shafts: 1.50 kilograms each antenna, 0.80 kilograms each shaft. OKM's field guidance calls for a steady antenna height, about 10 centimeters where terrain allows, since changing height mid-scan introduces error. Before every scan the operator sets a soil type in the app, and OKM's manual is direct about why: depth reads close to actual only when that setting is right. Its own reference table on ground materials shows signal loss swinging by roughly four orders of magnitude between dry rock and seawater. The unit is IP20, not waterproof.

OKM names its own scan modes two different ways, and neither one is picked as correct here
Starting a scan means two choices. Scan type is 2D, a single line to pre-check an area for large anomalies, or 3D, multiple parallel lines building a full-area data set viewable afterward in either form. Scan pattern is Parallel, every line starting from the same side with a walk-back before the next, or Zig-Zag, running in both directions with no walk-back. OKM says Parallel suits uneven or sloped ground and gives experienced users their best graphics; Zig-Zag suits a fast first pass. None of that workflow matches OKM's own product page, whose feature list reads "Operating modes: 3D Ground Scan, 2D Radargram." The manual's software walkthrough instead uses "2D Scan" and "3D Scan," each run as Parallel or Zig-Zag. Two namings, both from OKM directly, and we are not picking a winner.

Two antennas connect by color, and both send or read a 60 to 300 megahertz signal
The transmitting antenna carries a red-marked connector and sends the radar signal, adjustable across 60 to 300 megahertz through its telescopic elements, into the ground. The receiving antenna carries a silver-marked connector and collects the echo. Both are triangular, unshielded, 1010 by 330 by 50 millimeters, and weigh 1.50 kilograms each. A telescopic shaft mounts each antenna to the control unit, adjusts from 590 to 1630 millimeters for the operator's height, and houses the rechargeable battery, 7.26 volts, 2600 milliamp hours, that powers the control unit. The control unit itself sets four levels of send and receive timing, runs 9 complete measurement cycles a second, and records 512 samples per cycle.

The tablet connects by USB-C cable, and OKM's manual wants that cable in place before every scan
OKM's current product page and manual agree, in near-identical wording, that the tablet talks to the control unit over a physical USB-C cable, and the manual says to connect the two before every scan since an overlong cable can interfere with the measurement. Two of the three dealer pages we checked describe this as WiFi instead. This page follows OKM's current pages, and the WiFi description looks like it carries over from an earlier Gepard generation, unconfirmed with OKM directly. The tablet runs the Gepard GPR 3D Android app, activated once by QR code or a manual code. Data exports as PDF, PNG, CSV or DZT. GPS is optional per scan, receive-only, and places a scan on a map rather than touching the antenna signal. Analysis runs on OKM Visualizer 3D Studio, Professional Edition, on the included USB flash drive.

The control unit runs about 4 hours on a charge, and OKM never publishes how long it takes to refill
Each telescopic shaft's own battery, 7.26 volts and 2600 milliamp hours, powers the control unit for about 4 hours per charge. OKM does not publish a cycle count or a charging time anywhere we checked, including the full manual, which describes only a charging LED that switches off once full. The control unit runs -20 to 55 degrees Celsius and stores at -25 to 60, per OKM's manual and its live product page, which agree with each other. Humidity is rated 5 to 70 percent. A built-in anti-tampering module destroys the unit if opened improperly, so there is nothing inside to service.

OKM's manual carries an unprompted warning: if a buried find looks like ordnance, leave it and call the police
Unexploded ordnance and war-era relics remain buried across much of the world, and OKM's manual raises this unprompted: note reddish ground color as a possible rust indicator, treat curved or round objects, buttons, rings, ammunition or shells as alarm signs, and do not dig, handle or move anything that fits that description, since old explosives can form residue that detonates on contact; report finds to the police instead. OKM states the radar poses no ordinary health hazard under normal use, citing the low power of its signal. The transmitting system is unshielded, and OKM's manual states plainly it is not approved for use in the European Union, with an instruction to check local regulations; that notice does not appear on OKM's own product page or FAQ. Keep the unit 50 meters from large motors or unshielded loudspeakers, and keep metal, phones, keys or jewelry off the operator, since these can distort scan data. Cold-to-warm condensation and direct mains power both carry their own manual warnings; only OKM's own charger should ever connect to the unit.
