OKM eXp 5500 Professional
W-9 and vendor pack with every quote
Shipped direct from the manufacturer
Magnetometer, 3D Ground Scan and VLF Metal Detection, each one enabled by the probe you connect. OKM's own manual describes the eXp 5500 Professional as a ground scanner for treasure hunting in non-hazardous environments, not a mine detector.
01
OKM's own manual settles one question before any spec matters: this is not a mine detector
OKM describes the eXp 5500 Professional as a high quality ground scanner, recommended for treasure hunting in non-hazardous environments. The same passage states the device has not been designed as a mine detector. That is the manufacturer's own language, and it settles the question before a single spec matters. Three detection modes cover what is left. Magnetometer finds small ferromagnetic objects, iron, nickel and cobalt, near the surface, and also helps pinpoint a target during excavation. 3D Ground Scan builds a visualization of what is underground for later analysis in OKM's Visualizer 3D Studio software. VLF Metal Detection, very low frequency, finds metal at shallow depth. Each mode only becomes available once its matching probe is connected: Super Sensor and PentaSense system for the first two, PentaCoil for the third.
02
OKM's product page states 25 meters deep, and none of its own sources attach a condition to that figure
OKM's product page states customers can find objects down to 25 m (82 ft) deep. The product page, the FAQ, the spec table and the full 34 page manual carry no soil type, target size or test condition attached to that figure. The manual's only nearby disclaimer covers the whole spec table in general terms, average values, slight variation possible, and does not single out depth. A number with no test condition is a marketing claim, not a lab result, so it does not appear in this page's spec rows. What is stated precisely instead is what each probe measures and how it is configured.
03
The Super Sensor pairs with up to four Enhancers, and the sensor count moves from one pair to five
The Super Sensor is the base probe for Magnetometer and 3D Ground Scan mode. It measures 1010 x 200 x 110 mm, weighs 0.74 kg, and runs a 180 cm cable back to the control unit. Enhancers are OKM's plug in probes that extend it, attached in matched top and bottom pairs on the same side. The Super Sensor alone gives 1 pair of sensors; two Enhancers on one side give 3; all four Enhancers give 5. OKM's own sources disagree on Enhancer length. The manual's technical specifications chapter states 335 mm; OKM's product page states 355 mm for the same part. Diameter and weight, 45 mm and 0.1 kg, agree everywhere checked. The PentaSense Rod that carries the array folds from 920 mm closed to 1520 mm open, 2.76 kg on its own.
04
The PentaCoil is a motion detector, and holding it still over a target finds nothing
VLF, very low frequency, is the third mode, and the PentaCoil is its probe. It measures 345 x 265 x 70 mm, weighs 0.84 kg, and carries the same IP40 rating as every other probe on this system. OKM's manual is specific about how to use it: swing it over the ground at roughly walking pace, about 5 cm above the surface. Holding it motionless above a buried object will not detect it. Five preset profiles, All Metal, Militaria, Relics, Gold and Treasures, plus a Custom profile, map different metal types to Target-ID zones. The operator can run one, two or three of five selectable frequencies, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 40 kHz, at once. Keep the coil at least 2 m from other metallic objects and at least 15 m from another active detector, both figures from OKM's own interference guidance. Clear visible metallic debris from the scan field before measuring.
05
The control unit runs 7 hours on a charge, and OKM's own manual gives two different temperature ceilings for it
The 8.4 inch touchscreen control unit weighs 1.7 kg. It runs an ARM Cortex quad core processor at 1.6 GHz, with 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of onboard storage. Battery life is rated at 7 hours at 25°C, 77°F, medium display brightness, OKM's own condition. A full recharge takes 3 hours between 10°C and 30°C. Data moves over USB-C, and feedback comes through built in speakers or Bluetooth Low Latency headphones. OKM's technical specifications chapter rates operating temperature at -10 to 50°C. Its troubleshooting chapter separately states the unit will not power on or charge below -10°C or above 60°C. That is a wider bound the manual never reconciles with the rated range. Storage runs -20 to 60°C. The whole system is rated IP40, dust protected, not water protected. OKM's manual states plainly, of the control unit, waterproof: no.
06
OKM's cautions cover pacemakers, ammunition and a permit the purchase does not automatically grant
The PentaSense system is passive and emits no magnetic waves; the PentaCoil is active and does emit electro-magnetic fields. OKM states metal detectors are generally not known to interfere with pacemakers when used as instructed, and recommends checking with a doctor first for anyone wearing one. If a scan turns up something that looks like ordnance, OKM's manual is direct: do not touch it, report it to the police. A reddish tint in surface soil can indicate rust from a fuse; curved or round objects can be coins, rings or ammunition parts. Buying the detector does not grant a detection or excavation permit on its own; requirements vary state to state, and landowner or agency approval may still be required. Avoid using the detector during thunderstorms, since lightning and other atmospheric conditions can produce unusual or incorrect scan images. Keep water away from the electronics during maintenance, and do not operate the device after drinking alcohol or taking drugs.

Operating modes
| Modes available on this model | OKM's own eXp 5500 Professional user manual lists exactly three detection operating modes: Magnetometer, 3D Ground Scan, and VLF Metal Detection. Each becomes available only once its matching probe (Super Sensor/PentaSense System for the first two, PentaCoil for the third) is connected |
| Magnetometer | Detects small ferromagnetic objects (iron, nickel, cobalt) near the surface using the Super Sensor/PentaSense System. Also used to pinpoint objects during excavation |
| 3D Ground Scan | Produces a detailed visualization of underground structures and potential targets for further analysis in OKM Visualizer 3D Studio, using the Super Sensor/PentaSense System. Three scan/impulse mode combinations: Parallel/Automatic (entry-level, flat to slightly sloping terrain), Parallel/Manual (very rough terrain), and Zigzag/Automatic (advanced users, flat terrain) |
| VLF Metal Detection | Detects metal objects at shallow depths using the PentaCoil. Five preset scan profiles (All Metal, Militaria, Relics, Gold, Treasures) plus a Custom profile, each mapped to different metal types and Target-ID zones. Selectable single or multi-frequency operation across 5, 10, 15, 20 or 40 kHz depending on profile, up to 3 frequencies at once |
| OKM's FAQ page, operating-mode discrepancy | OKM's own FAQ (comparison entries "Rover C4 vs eXp series" and "Fusion Pro Plus vs eXp series") states the eXp series as a whole offers Ground Scan, Magnetometer, Pinpointer, Mineral Scan, Live Stream and Tunnel Scan. None of Pinpointer, Mineral Scan, Live Stream or Tunnel Scan appears anywhere in the eXp 5500 Professional's own 34-page user manual. The FAQ text describes the eXp series generally and does not specify which of these modes apply to which individual eXp model |
Safety and cautions (from the manual)
| Caution during excavation | "Do not touch detected ammunition! Report it to the police!" (DANGER notice). OKM's guidance: excavate carefully around a clear target signal to avoid damaging a find or accidentally detonating old ammunition. A reddish soil color near the surface can indicate rust from fuses; curved or round objects may be coins or rings, or parts of ammunition |
| Pacemakers | The PentaSense System is passive and does not emit magnetic waves. The PentaCoil is active and does emit electro-magnetic fields. OKM states metal detectors are generally not known to interfere with pacemakers when used as instructed, but recommends the user clarify possible interference with their doctor if wearing a pacemaker or similar device |
| Explosion or detonation-specific warning | OKM's eXp 5500 Professional manual does not contain a standalone "danger of explosion" chapter or heading. Its only detonation-related language is the excavation caution above ("minimize the possibility of accidentally detonating old ammunition") |
| Interference distances | Keep probes away from electric motors, speakers, phones and keys. PentaSense System: at least 50 m (160 ft). PentaCoil: at least 2 m (7 ft) from metallic objects, at least 15 m (49 ft) from active interference sources such as other detectors. Remove visible metallic debris from the scan field before measuring |
| Weather | Avoid using the detector during thunderstorms; atmospheric conditions such as lightning can produce unusual or incorrect scan images |
| Not a mine detector | OKM's manual states the device "has been specifically designed and manufactured as a high-quality ground scanner and is recommended for treasure hunting in non-hazardous environments. This metal detector has not been designed as a mine detector" |
| Choking hazard | The Protector Case carries a DANGER notice: choking and asphyxiation hazard, keep away from children. The disposal chapter repeats the same warning for any plastic bag used with the device |
| Alcohol and drugs | OKM's manual states: do not drink alcohol or take drugs before or during operation of the device, and follow the instructions carefully |
| Electrical hazard during maintenance | Keep water away from electronic components and cables (WARNING notice in the maintenance chapter) |
| Legal permits | OKM states that purchasing the detector does not automatically grant a detection or excavation permit; the search for historical or archaeological artifacts and structures may be regulated differently state to state, and approvals from landowners, public agencies and/or government authorities may be required |
| Battery storage | If storing the eXp 5500 for long periods, avoid fully discharging the battery. Recharge at least every 3 months, to approximately 90% of maximum capacity |
| User-serviceable parts | No additional tools are required for assembly. OKM states there are no end-user-serviceable parts inside the device or accessories, with the sole exception of the internal control unit battery, which is user-replaceable following the manual's own procedure (Torx T10 screws) |
