One VLF coil handles pinpointing and a full 3D ground scan, in a control unit that does not take interchangeable probes.

01

One fixed VLF coil runs both modes here, and it is not a system you expand later

OKM builds the Evolution NTX around a single sensor, the SCMI-15-D VLF search coil, wired to a 3.5 inch touchscreen control unit on a telescopic probe. It runs two modes: Live Sound, an acoustic pinpointing mode, and 3D Scan, which records a graphical picture of the ground for later review on a computer. OKM keeps interchangeable, swap-out probes for its Rover, Fusion and eXp lines; this coil is fixed. If your work means adding sensors as it grows, look further up OKM's range. If you want one unit that pinpoints and records a 3D scan out of the box, this is that unit.

Live Sound clears an area first; 3D Scan is the mode that records what is underneath it

Live Sound is an acoustic-only VLF mode. OKM's manual calls it useful for objects near the surface, coins and rings among them, with only shallow penetration, and it stores no data. 3D Scan is the recording mode: it builds a graphical scan for review afterward, with the VLF detector optionally running at the same time, and needs a ground balance step before each session to account for local soil. OKM names the underlying technology GST, Ground Scan Technology, and EMSR, Electro-Magnetic Signature Reading, in its own manual footnotes. Depth in either mode follows only a qualitative rule OKM states in its manual, the larger the object, the deeper the detection, with no soil type, target size or baseline figure attached to it.

1024 samples a second, on a 3.5 inch touchscreen, run by three onboard processors

The control unit samples the ground at 1024 values per second at 16-bit resolution, shown on a 3.5 inch resistive touchscreen at 480 by 320 pixels. A Cortex M3 chip at 32 MHz handles the main processing, a Cortex M0 at 24 MHz runs alongside it, and a third Cortex M3 with 128 KB of RAM drives the display. Scan data sits on 4 GB of onboard memory. The telescopic probe adjusts from 540 to 810 mm, the whole unit weighs about 1.5 kg, and it draws up to 60 W from a 19 V DC input. Audio comes through the internal speaker or Bluetooth headphones.

Bluetooth 5.1 drives the headphones, and the bundled 3D software needs a Windows 10 computer that meets OKM's current requirements

OKM's current product page and its own manual both give Bluetooth 5.1, 2.402 to 2.480 GHz, up to 1 Mbps, a maximum transmitting power of +8 dBm and about 10 meters of range, control unit to headphones or a USB dongle. The bundled Visualizer 3D Studio software needs a Windows 10 computer with at least 2 GB RAM, a 1.2 GHz processor, a 1920 by 1080 display and OpenGL 3.3 graphics, per that same current page. Check your computer against OKM's current requirements before you order.

Rated -10 °C to 60 °C for this model; OKM's general FAQ claims -20 °C for its scanners as a line

OKM's spec table and manual give the Evolution NTX an operating range of -10 °C to 60 °C and a storage range of -20 °C to 70 °C, with humidity from 5 to 75 percent. OKM's own FAQ, answering a general question about its 3D ground scanners and metal detectors as a group, states operation down to -20 °C with no exception named for this model. We carry the model-specific figure here, since it comes from the Evolution NTX's own spec table and manual rather than a general FAQ answer, and the gap between the two stays unresolved. The unit is not waterproof; OKM's manual says water or condensation can destroy it, with no formal ingress rating published anywhere. Keep it 50 meters from large electric motors or unshielded loudspeakers, and leave metal objects off your body while scanning.

06

OKM's manual devotes a full section to unexploded ordnance, and its rule is simple: stop and call the police

Do not dig at or hack a metal signal; old ordnance can still be live in former conflict ground. A reddish color near the surface can mean rust, and curved or round shapes, buttons, rings, pegs, or anything resembling ammunition or a shell, should not be touched or moved, since aged explosive material can turn crystalline and detonate from friction or movement alone. Mark the spot, leave it, and call the police. Used properly, OKM's manual states the device normally poses no health hazard, since its signals run at low power. The control unit carries a built-in anti-tamper module that destroys it if opened without authorization, with no parts inside for a user to service, and it should never run from a 115 or 230 volt mains supply directly, only the charger included with it. OKM's own manual preface adds one thing plainly: buying or using this device does not guarantee a find, and soil type, ground water, clay and sand content can all reduce what any detector, any make or model, will pick up.

07 FOR UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

OKM's 2-year warranty is tied to buying direct from OKM in Germany, and that is not how we sell it

Purchase orders are accepted from universities, colleges and government agencies, and everything ships direct from the manufacturer. On warranty: OKM's own FAQ ties its 2-year "OKM Direct" warranty specifically to detectors bought directly from OKM GmbH in Altenburg, Germany, not through a reseller, and OKM publishes no general warranty term for reseller purchases on any page we checked. We have not confirmed the warranty term My Surveying Direct itself honors on this unit, so call before you order if that term matters to your decision. On the box: OKM's current page lists a control unit, a notebook, the software, headphones, a charger, a travel adapter, a case and a quick start guide, but OKM's own manual lists the notebook as optional rather than standard. Call +1 888 850 6533, Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 Mountain Time, and we will confirm exactly what ships with your order, warranty term included, before you buy.

Safety and cautions (from OKM's own materials)
Guaranteed results OKM's own manual states: "By purchasing or using one of our products, we cannot guarantee that during the course of your research that you will be successful and have a find", and that variable soil types, ground water, clays, sands and wet soils "may reduce the maximum depth capabilities of any and all detection equipment, regardless of make or model"
Health hazards If used properly, OKM states the device does not pose health hazards; the high-frequency signals are "not harmful to the human body on account of their low power"
Tamper protection The control unit has a built-in anti-tampering module that destroys the unit if improperly opened; there are no end-user-serviceable parts inside
Metallic interference Remove metallic objects such as phones, keys and jewelry before scanning, and do not wear steel toe boots, since these can affect scan data
Power supply Never use the 115/230 volt mains supply directly; use only the approved chargers and batteries included in the scope of delivery
Moisture The unit is not weatherproof; water or condensation can destroy it. When moving from a cold place to a warmer one, allow condensation to fully evaporate before operating
Explosive ordnance OKM's manual devotes a dedicated section to unexploded ordnance risk: do not dig or hack at a metal signal; a reddish ground color can indicate rust, and curved or round shapes (buttons, rings, pegs) are a sign of alarm; never touch recognizable ammunition, shells or war-era relics, since old explosives can crystallize and detonate from friction or movement; mark the location and report the find to police
