RX2 has no SIM slot, no cellular modem and no radio, so it cannot fix a position on its own

Emlid calls RX2 a compact all-band network RTK rover, not a base-and-rover kit like the RS series. It carries no onboard cellular hardware of any kind. Emlid's own support page groups RX2 with the models whose serial number sits under the USB port cover. That is a different group from the Reach RS2, RS2+ and RS3, which do carry a SIM card slot. To turn raw satellite signals into a fixed, centimeter-level position, RX2 pairs over Bluetooth with a phone or tablet running the free Emlid Flow app. That phone supplies two things RX2 does not have on board: the internet connection, and, through it, the correction stream the fix depends on. RX2 is the rover half of a two-piece system, and the phone supplying internet and corrections is the other half, every time it runs.

Horizontal accuracy is 7 mm plus 1 ppm, and a fix typically arrives in about 5 seconds

RTK, real-time kinematic, is the correction method that turns an ordinary satellite fix into a survey-grade one. Emlid's own datasheet rates RX2 at 7 mm plus 1 ppm horizontal and 14 mm plus 1 ppm vertical, tested under RTK FIX. RTK FIX is the locked, highest-confidence solution state. Tilt compensation lets you hold the pole off vertical and still get an accurate point. Emlid describes it as the base accuracy figure plus 2 mm plus 0.3 mm per degree of tilt. Convergence, the time RX2 takes to lock a fixed solution once it has corrections, runs to about 5 seconds typically under good conditions, per Emlid's own specification. RX2 tracks across 672 channels, all-band, spanning GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS and NavIC, updating at 5 Hz. More constellations and more channels give the receiver more satellites to choose from in a partly obstructed sky, the kind you get working near trees or buildings.

Three ways to feed RX2 corrections, and every one needs internet reaching both ends

Emlid's own documentation names three correction sources, and all three run through the paired phone. First, any third-party NTRIP or CORS network, a subscription service you pay that provider for separately. Second, Emlid Corrections, Emlid's own built-in service, with one year included on a new receiver and a paid renewal after. Third, a second receiver relayed to RX2 over the internet. That is a Reach RS4 or RS4 Pro on Emlid's own named workflow, or another manufacturer's base station on its generic guide. Both base workflows require internet access for both receivers, not just the rover, Emlid states plainly. Once connected, RX2 is light on data, about 16 MB per device over 8 hours of NTRIP use. RX2 also needs a clear sky view, at least 30 degrees above the horizon in every direction, away from other electronics that can produce RF noise. Emlid says directly that a spot good enough for a smartphone's own GPS, indoors near a window, is not good enough for RX2.

Emlid's own spec table gives 16 hours of battery life, and its own marketing copy on the same page says 18

A single Emlid built-in Li-Ion cell, 7000 mAh at 3.6 V, 25.2 Wh, charges over USB Type-C at 5 V 2 A with the cable supplied. Emlid's own product page states 18 hours in a marketing paragraph and 16 hours in its own spec table, on the same page. The datasheet and the documentation both independently confirm 16 hours, and that is the figure this page uses. The 18-hour line is Emlid's own, unresolved, and we are not picking a side. RX2 weighs 280 grams, about 0.62 lb, and measures 172 by 51 by 51 mm. It carries an IP68 rating, water resistant to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes, and runs from -20 to +65 degrees Celsius. The mount is a 5/8 inch-11 UNC thread with a quick-release adapter, built not to add backlash to a tilt-compensated reading. Certifications are FCC, CE, IC and MFi, the last meaning it works with Apple devices.

Base-station mode and post-processing are not documented for RX2, and Emlid does not say either way

RX2's own documentation describes it only as a rover. No base-output setup exists anywhere in its documentation set, unlike Reach RS4 and RS4 Pro, which RX2's own documentation names as base units it can pair with. PPK, post-processed kinematic, means logging raw data and correcting it afterward rather than in real time, and Emlid states nothing either way about RX2 doing it. RX2's documentation covers RTK-mode work, including a guide for supplying ground control points to a drone's own PPK mapping workflow. There, RX2 works in RTK mode rather than post-processing its own logged data. One independent dealer states outright that RX2 cannot serve as a base station or do post-processing. Emlid neither confirms nor denies that for RX2, so we are leaving it open rather than guessing. Call if either capability decides your purchase, and we will confirm before you order.

Built for sites with cellular coverage, tracking six satellite constellations through one phone connection

RX2 pulls signal from GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS and NavIC across its 672 channels, communicating to the paired phone over Bluetooth 4.2. The USB Type-C port handles charging and wired data. Corrections come in over RTCM3 through NTRIP; position data goes out in NMEA, the standard format most field software and GIS tools already read. Emlid designs RX2 to simplify data collection at sites with cellular coverage, assuming a phone, a signal and a subscription are already part of the workflow. That fits land surveying, construction layout and GIS data collection, where the crew already carries a smartphone and works inside cell range. It is a poor fit for remote sites with no signal to feed it.

How RX2 gets a fix RX2 cannot generate an RTK fix on its own. It pairs over Bluetooth with a phone or tablet running the Emlid Flow app, and that phone or tablet supplies the internet or cellular data connection RX2 itself does not have. Emlid's own documentation states RX2 is designed to simplify the data collection workflow at sites with cellular coverage, and that Emlid Flow uses the phone's internet connection to access NTRIP corrections and send them to RX2 over Bluetooth
